Why I Built myNomNom: A Health Tracker That Respects You

Published by mkadmin on 2 August 2025

Most health and fitness apps feel like they’re built to monetize your habits. You sign up, and suddenly your data’s being harvested, features are locked behind paywalls, and you’re nudged toward yet another subscription. That’s not how I think software should work.

So I built myNomNom—a health and fitness tracker designed around privacy, empowerment, and zero monetization. It’s closed-source, yes—but everything inside it is free. No ads. No subscriptions. No bait-and-switch.

Just a clean, secure experience that helps you take care of yourself without being taken advantage of.

🔧 The Philosophy Behind It

I’ve always believed software should serve the user—not the business model. myNomNom is built on a few core principles:

  • Privacy-first: Your data stays yours. No tracking, no analytics scripts, no third-party nonsense.
  • Free forever: Every feature is available from day one. No premium tiers, no locked functionality.
  • Emotionally rewarding: The app isn’t just functional—it’s designed to feel good to use.

Whether you're logging your meals or sending a nudge to a friend, the experience is meant to support you, not sell to you.

🔐 Security That Earns Trust

Security isn’t an afterthought—it’s foundational. myNomNom includes:

  • JWT-based authentication for secure sessions
  • Encrypted passwords and 2FA via TOTP
  • Full account deletion that actually removes your data

I wanted users to feel safe knowing they’re in control. No hidden retention policies. No vague “deactivation.” Just real, irreversible deletion if you choose to leave.

📅 Tracking That Works for You

The Daily Diary is the heart of the app. It lets you log:

  • Food intake (via both a local database and Open Food Facts)
  • Exercise routines
  • Water consumption
  • Fasting periods and streaks

You can even create custom food entries, and choose whether to keep them private or share them with the global database. It’s a small feature, but it reflects a bigger idea: personalization without compromise.

🏆 Progress That Feels Good

I didn’t want to build another leaderboard. Instead, myNomNom focuses on:

  • Achievements that celebrate consistency and healthy habits
  • Friend systems to share progress and support each other
  • Nudges—gentle encouragements you can send to friends

It’s gamification with empathy. The goal isn’t competition—it’s connection.

🧠 Under the Hood

It’s built with Node.js, Express, and MongoDB—structured around RESTful APIs and designed to scale cleanly as the user base grows.

💬 Feedback That Matters

Users can submit feedback or bug reports directly through the app, which sends email alerts to me. It’s a simple loop, but it keeps the platform responsive and grounded in real user experience.

🚀 What Comes Next

I’m continuing to refine the experience—tightening up the UI, improving performance, and exploring new features that align with the core philosophy: privacy, empowerment, and emotional resonance.

If you’re tired of health apps that treat you like a product, myNomNom offers something different. It’s not trying to sell you anything. It’s just here to help.
